Presentation Description

Satir Family Camp (SFC) is a model of an Intentional Community that is created by and utilizes Virginia Satir’s theories and methods. We will provide information about Satir Family Camp and the way it has grown and changed since Virginia conceptualized it in 1976. Through lecture, discussion and experiential exercises you will also have an opportunity to explore your own ideas about Intentional Communities and discuss how Satir methods can be used within them.

 

Objectives:

  • Identify the steps in creating and ongoing development of a Satir Family Camp.

  • Summarize how Satir theories and methods can be applies to an Intentional Community.

  • Assess how the Satir Family Camp was crated and utilized by Virginia Satir and the creation of community.

Presenters:

David and Faith Friedlander, with their family, have attended Satir Family Camp since 1983. Their adult children with their families continue to go to camp. David is Board President of Satir Family Camp. David and Faith (a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) are founders of Kids & Families Together, a not-for-profit center in Ventura, CA. It serves families that have come together through foster care, kinship care and adoption.      

 

Elsa Ten Broeck, is a member of the Satir Family Camp Board of Directors and has attended SFC since 1993. She is the co-author of the book Satir Family Camp: An Intentional Community Living Virginia Satir’s Legacy. Elsa is a retired social worker and educator who worked for over 30 years in public child welfare.
